A Pathway to Affordable, Low Carbon Heating - in one word CHUP
The Community Heating Upgrade Programme
The Community Heating Upgrade Programme (CHUP) is an AZ Renewable Energy initiative designed to accelerate the transition to cleaner, more efficient heating across UK communities. The programme focuses on upgrading outdated systems, improving energy efficiency, lowering household heating costs, and supporting the government’s Net Zero strategy. CHUP also bridges the gap between homeowner demand and the financial support available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), making renewable heating more accessible than ever.
CHUP provides households with a practical route to adopt renewable heating technologies at a significantly reduced cost. By prioritising solutions that rely on sustainable energy sources, the programme helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels, cut carbon emissions, and contribute to a healthier environment.
Through strategic alignment with grant funding and cost‑effective installation models, CHUP ensures that the benefits of renewable heating are within reach for more homes, supporting both individual savings and wider community sustainability goals.
Affordability:
Environmental Impact & Net Zero Alignment
CHUP directly supports the UK’s legally binding Net Zero target by promoting renewable heating systems capable of reducing carbon emissions by up to 70% compared to traditional fossil fuel boilers.
With heating responsible for around 18% of the UK’s total greenhouse gas emissions, scaling renewable installations is essential to decarbonising over 30 million homes and businesses by 2050.
Government ambitions include increasing annual renewable heating installations from 55,000 in 2021 to 600,000 by 2028. CHUP’s focus on affordability, regional targeting, and practical deployment aligns with these national objectives, strengthening energy security and improving air quality.
